Falcon Flyer Forestwood Middle School March, 2008
|
|
From the Principal's Desk . . .
The students of Forestwood continue
to make all of us proud in both their academic work and extracurricular
activities. The remaining twelve weeks
of the school year bring with them numerous culminating activities including
the completion of a year's worth of course work, the Texas Assessment of
Knowledge and Skills, the district UIL academic competition, and a number of
athletic, musical and theatrical events designed to conclude the work of a
school year. We all have grown accustomed
to expect great achievements and no doubt we will see more of what has become
routine. Regardless of the final
measures in terms of scores or ratings, it is the level of commitment, hard
work, and sincerity with which our students take on every activity that is the
most important and of which we are most proud!
In an effort to recognize the
achievements of our students, at the end of each six-week grading period we
conduct an honors assembly during the Teaming period. We publicly acknowledge the students who have
achieved "A" Honor Roll status, "A/B" Honor Roll status, perfect attendance and
those who are being recognized by their teachers in Falcon Fiesta. Students recognized in Falcon Fiesta are
selected by their teachers based on their academic achievement measured by the
effort applied rather than the resulting grade, consistency in school work, citizenship,
and overall willingness to meet the expectations of the school. Elective teachers provide equal input to the
selection process. The name of this
program was chosen to reflect the idea of a celebration for student achievement. The fiesta takes place on the Friday after
report cards are received in the form of social time in the Library during
Teaming when our honorees are able to visit with their peers and enjoy snacks
provided by our dedicated PTA Board.
The spring of each year brings with
it a focus on our accountability rating and the annual state assessment tests. Our staff has implemented a comprehensive
plan for the preparation of our students for even greater successes than we
have experienced to date. After
establishing the campus goal of maintaining our "exemplary" rating, we have
identified student needs in the area of test preparation and will be addressing
those needs in special assistance sessions in addition to our work in the
regular classroom setting. We intend to
not only experience improvement in the overall numbers of students who pass the
test; we are planning to increase the number of students who are recognized for
"commended" performance. Teachers will
be working with students during the Teaming period, and in before and after
school sessions. We ask that if your
child is talking about being invited to one of these activities, that you urge
them to attend and take advantage of their teacher's efforts. With your support we will be able to ensure that
test day is an opportunity for your children to shine and experience the
successes and associated recognition they so richly deserve. With one TAKS testing day already completed, the remaining TAKS tests are scheduled for April 8th
(8th grade math) and the week of April 28th for 6th
and 7th grade math and reading as well as 8th grade
social studies and science. Please help
us make sure our students are well prepared, well rested, and ready to "make
their mark." It is important to note
that lunch times will change on these days and we also request that doctor's
appointments, etc. not be scheduled for this week if at all possible.
This time of year not only includes
culminating activities, but also preparation for the upcoming school year. As this newsletter hits your inbox registration forms for the 2008-2009 school year will be making their way home and your students will want to discuss
course selections for the new school year.
Please feel free to contact our counselors or an administrator with any
questions or concerns related to the preparations for next year.
As with every edition of this
newsletter it is imperative that we once again thank the parents for their
support; we are grateful. Please do not
hesitate to make contact with your child's teachers, the counselors or an
administrator if you are in need of information, support or assistance; we are
here for that purpose and we welcome your involvement.

PTA News
Congratulations
to David Girardi, Debra Haburay and Sandy Watson for receiving Lifetime
Membership to Texas PTA. Jan Picardi
was awarded the Extended Service Award for her outstanding 10 years of service
to PTA. All recipients were announced at
the recent Founder's Day Dinner and will be honored by Forestwood at the April PTA
meeting.
We would
like to invite everyone to the next PTA meeting on April 22nd at 7:00 in the FMS Cafeteria. Our program will be a question and answer
session regarding the upcoming LISD Bond Election. Watch for more information as the date draws
closer. Hope to see you there!
We would
like to thank everyone who has been remembering to use the Kroger Share Card
when shopping at Kroger. The program
will be undergoing a slight change at the end of this month. After March 25, you will no longer need to
show the Kroger Share Card in order to attach your purchase to FMS PTA. They will begin using a number similar to the
way it is done at Tom Thumb. We are
awaiting instructions regarding the new program. It's not clear yet if the change over will be
automatic or if customers will need to register. We hope that everyone will continue to use
the program and support this donation program.

It's Not Easy Being Green!
Campaign to keep Forestwood Green
We need your help! Our front
'garden' is most unattractive. The bushes are tall and unwelcoming. The flowers
are dead or wilted. Is this what you want to see every time you drive up to
Forestwood? We don't either.
Ms. Moss' 6th
grade classes are raising money, asking for donations, looking for business or
corporate sponsors and trying to get plants, shrubs and trees donated to make
the front of our school look awesome and help improve the environment.

Upcoming Events - Be an Active Part of the Campaign to keep Forestwood Green!
Friday, March 14th is GREEN DAY at school. Green day is where you wear green - as much
green as possible: green hats, bandanas, shirts, pants, socks, shoes. (Remember,
no hair or body parts can be green.) You will pay 25 cents for each piece of
green clothing you wear. So WEAR
green and help Forestwood GO Green!
Saturday, March 29th is FORESTWOOD'S GREEN FLING: This is an entertaining event where we will have a
car wash for donations, a bounce house for a buck or two (donated by Space Walk
of Flower Mound - thanks Katie), lemonade and cookies for sale and a Guitar Hero
teacher challenge where you can challenge one of the talented teachers to a
song of guitar hero for a small fee.
April 1st - 4th is our BRICK DRIVE.
If you have left over brick at your house that you thought you might use
someday, well, this may just be 'that day'. We are going to add a walkway
through our new landscape area and would like to use mixed brick that we
collect. You will be able to drop off what you have before or after school this
week.
April 7th - 11th
is PLANTING WEEK!
Please help with this
project that will benefit all students and parents, the community and our
environment. If you can donate plants, shrubs, money or more please contact: Ms. Moss at Forestwood:
(469)713-5972 ext. 2733 or mossdj@lisd.net
Thank you,
Natalee, Jordan, Kaninikaa
and the rest of Ms. Moss' 4th period class |
Falcon Fiesta!
At our last Falcon Fiesta, held on February 1st, a
great time was had by all. It was amazing how much food could be consumed in
only 20 minutes! There will be two more this school year: Friday, March 14th
and Friday, May 2nd.
Falcon Fiesta is a PTA sponsored student recognition
and reward program during which selected students have an opportunity to attend
a short reception in their honor.
Students are selected by teachers on
each team at the end of each six week grading period. The selection criteria
are based upon positive attitude toward school work, consistent effort,
excellent behavior, hard work, and attention is given to those who have shown
improvement. This is a program every student has an opportunity to attain and
should work toward. Go for it Falcons and make it hard for the teachers to
choose!
Once selected, the student is invited to the library for snacks
during teaming at which time they may socialize and just have fun! This is a
reward for a job well done!
If you would like to help by donating snacks,
please contact Melanie McCoy at (972) 355-9092 or jomelkel@aol.com. |
