From the Principal's Desk . . .
How is
it possible that we are already writing the final issue of the "Falcon
Flyer?" The year has been full of
successes for the Forestwood Community.
Academically this has been a banner year as our students have
consistently performed at levels beyond those of the previous two years. In extracurricular activities we have seen unsurpassed
effort and commitment across the board from athletics to Band, Choir and
Orchestra. In each issue of this
newsletter we have been able to say we are proud of our students and that has
not changed. We look for a strong
conclusion to an incredibly successful year!
In addition, the age old mantra that parent involvement makes the
difference in education is a way of life at Forestwood. All of the research on effective schools
includes significant parent involvement as one of the vital points toward the
success of a school. During this year we
have had parents supporting teachers in their workroom, helping in the library
and front office, tutoring, chaperoning dances, attending the Circle of Friends
functions, contributing snacks endlessly to all of our events, serving on the
PTA Board and on the various booster clubs.
Parent involvement is not only alive and well here at Forestwood, it is
a model for all middle schools! Thank
you for all you do to support and work with us in the critical mission of
educating your children.
The
TAKS testing is complete and we expect results before the end of the school
year; an individual score report will be included in your child's final report
card. We fully expect to celebrate great
achievements on this important measure of our work.
We
also are celebrating the conclusion of a semester's work; the garden in front
of our Library has been completely replaced and updated. Thanks to the hard work of many sixth grade
students, Ms. Deborah Moss, parents, community members, and a huge commitment
on the part of Schmitz Landscaping, we will enjoy this relaxing and pleasing
area for years to come. Please take note
as you pick up and drop off your child in the days to come.
There
will be much activity as we close out the school year. Check the school's website for year-end
concerts, trips, and meetings. Award
Recognitions will be conducted during our "Teaming" period (1:50
p.m. - 2:10 p.m.) on May 28th for 6th grade, May 29th
for 7th grade, and June 2nd for the 8th
grade. We will conclude the academic
year with exams on Tuesday, June 3rd, Wednesday, June 4th
and Thursday, June 5th.
Students will be released at 12:30 p.m. on the 5th. The school's website has a detailed exam schedule for the last week of school.
In the
event questions or concerns arise on any topic during the summer months, our
offices will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Monday through Thursday beginning Monday, June 9th and continuing through
August 8th. The offices will
be closed June 30th through the July 14th and re-open on
the 15th; we will return to the five-day week, 8:15
a.m. to 4:15 p.m. schedule on August 11th.
Student
Orientations are scheduled for Friday, August 15th; 8:30
a.m.
for 8th grade, 10:30 for 7th grade, and
our "FlightSchool" for 6th graders and "Boot Camp" for their parents
will begin at 1:30 p.m. The Fall Open House is set for Thursday,
August 28th (7th & 8th grades) and Tuesday,
September 2nd (6th grade) both beginning at 7:00
p.m.
and concluding at 8:30 p.m. We will run the abbreviated bell schedule on
the Open House evenings as has been tradition in previous years.
Historically,
summer vacation for schools was a necessity to allow children time to assist
with work on the family farm. The
evolution of our society has changed that need; however we have learned the
importance of the family on the overall well-being of our culture. The summer vacation from school is a time to
relax, have fun, take trips and do those things which bring the family together
as a cohesive unit. Those activities
strengthen your children; they improve your child's "learning capital" and
better prepare them for success in education and in life. It is the wish of Forestwood Middle School that your family has a safe,
fun, relaxing and educational summer! David

As
unbelievable as it seems, we're at the end of another school year. Many look at this as a mixed blessing. On the one hand, no more early morning band
sectionals, rehearsals, sports practices or last minute efforts to finish
projects and homework. For parents it's
the carpooling, study sessions and volunteering, all of which we do with love
but still look forward to the break.
Our
PTA year is gearing down from a busy month.
Our Hospitality chair, Cindy Garrison, honored the hard working
Forestwood staff the week of May 5 - 9 with goodies during the week and a great
down home BBQ for lunch on Friday. We
have had the last Falcon Fiesta and in April, the last dance of the year, both
a great success. In the past couple of
months behind the scenes, we have worked on a design for the FMS Spirit Shirt
for next year and arranged for school supplies to be available in the
fall.
With
the end of the school year comes the end of being pulled in so many directions,
which is generally welcome by most of us- until the end of that first week of
the summer break when parents, working and stay at home, hear those dreaded two
words, "I'm bored." And I guess when you
been multitasking at the level of a CEO and suddenly the biggest decision of
the day is when to get up or should I clean up my room now or wait until mom's
head starts spinning, you would be bored.
Even endless video gaming loses its appeal when it becomes so readily
available and not just something to look forward to after all of the academics
are covered.
So
take a break, do nothing for awhile, and then get a plan. I admire the families that have it all
figured out even before school gets out.
For some it's a camp here or there, a couple of local trips around the
area and maybe a vacation. At our house
we fly by the seat of our pants which is what we do best in the summer. Before you know it, you'll be gearing up to
start a new school year.
We
hope you will be able to join us for the final
PTA Regular meeting of the school year on May 22nd at 9:00 am in the FMS Cafeteria. In addition
to honoring our volunteers we will be approving Bylaws and Standing Rules
Amendments (previously presented at the April Regular Meeting) and approving
the 2008-09 PTA Budget.
Have
a great and safe summer!

| It's Not Easy Being Green . . .
|
. . . but we did it!
The Sixth Grade Silver team has made their mark on Forestwood Middle
School. Thanks to Schmitz Garden Center we
have a stunning entrance to our school that will help improve the environment,
make our school a more beautiful place and create a 'room with a view' from the
library which was the wish of the late Cynda Mast, our school librarian.
Joe Schmitz generously offered to donate all the supplies,
time, labor, trees, plants, flowers and patio from his company, Schmitz Gardening Center. He
and his crew were out most of the rainy day taking out the remaining plants and
installing the new landscape. PLEASE STOP BY THEIR BUSINESS, ACROSS FROM FLOWER MOUND HIGH
SCHOOL TO TELL THEM THANK YOU AND TO
MAKE YOUR SUMMER GARDENING PURCHASES!

Donations were graciously given from many people in the
community and from two fund raisers that the sixth graders planned. We'd like
to thank Katie B.'s father, of SPACEWALK OF FLOWER MOUND, for donating the
awesome dinosaur for our Green Fling. Alyssa J.'s uncle, Isabella's
grandfather, and the Forestwood Middle School Student Council for making cash
donations that will go to the upkeep and continued improvement of the garden
for years to come. Local businesses like Walmart in HighlandVillage, Home Depot
in Flower Mound, Calloway's and Yard Art in Lewisville all
donated gift cards to their stores for additional purchases.
Finally, this project could not have been started or completed
without the help of 'Grumpy', Samantha's grandfather who is a master gardener,
and his gardening friend Vivian Hicks. He spent time educating some of our sixth
graders about gardening; he drew the original plan, to scale, of the area to be
improved and was outside with the students for two days leading the students in
removing the existing plants and groundcover. Most importantly, he was a source
of encouragement and praise to Ms. Moss, who tried desperately to keep up with
her students' and their adventurous plans.

This has been a great experience for all involved and we
thank everyone who gave their time and support to help our sixth graders
realize that they can make positive changes in the world with a lot of
planning, hard work and the generosity of others!

New Kroger Share program even easier!
The Kroger donation program has been extremely successful this year
but has changed. As of March 25th the previous white Share Card is
no longer needed. Beginning May 1, 2008 the new program is in effect - customers must present the new ID#
(barcode) when they check out. You only need to show the barcode once, then the number will be associated with
your Kroger Card and you're done!
A copy of the letter explaining all the details and containing the necessary barcode is on the FMS website. Please visit the website, print out the letter and link your Kroger card on your next visit.
Thank you
for shopping Kroger and supporting FMS PTA!!

Falcon Fiesta
|
Last one for this school year
The last Falcon Fiesta was held on Friday, May 11th and a great time was had by
all! It's amazing how much food can be consumed in only 20 minutes!
Falcon Fiesta is a PTA sponsored student recognition and reward program
during which selected students have an opportunity to attend a short reception
in their honor. The selection criteria are based upon positive attitude toward
school work, consistent effort, excellent behaviour, hard work, and attention is
given to those who may have shown significant improvement. This is a program
every student has an opportunity to attain and should work toward! Once
selected, the student is invited to the library for snacks during teaming at
which time they may socialize and just have fun! This is a reward for a job
well done.

A big thank you goes out to all of the PTA volunteers who
helped by donating snacks and who helped set-up in the library! I appreciate
all that you did to make this program a success!!
