The students of Forestwood continue to make all of us proud in both their academic work and extracurricular activities. The remaining twelve weeks of the school year bring with them numerous culminating activities including the completion of a year’s worth of course work, the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, the district UIL academic competition, and a number of athletic, musical and theatrical events designed to conclude the work of a school year. We all have grown accustomed to expect great achievements and no doubt we will see more of what has become routine. Regardless of the final measures in terms of scores or ratings, it is the level of commitment, hard work, and sincerity with which our students take on every activity that is the most important and of which we are most proud!

In an effort to recognize the achievements of our students, at the end of each six-week grading period we conduct an honors assembly during the Teaming period. We publicly acknowledge the students who have achieved “A” Honor Roll status, “A/B” Honor Roll status, perfect attendance and those who are being recognized by their teachers in Falcon Fiesta. Students recognized in Falcon Fiesta are selected by their teachers based on their academic achievement measured by the effort applied rather than the resulting grade, consistency in school work, citizenship, and overall willingness to meet the expectations of the school. Elective teachers provide equal input to the selection process. The name was chosen to reflect the idea of a celebration for student achievement. The fiesta takes place on the Friday after report cards are received in the form of social time in the Library during Teaming when our honorees are able to visit with their peers and enjoy snacks provided by our dedicated PTA Board.

The spring of each year brings with it a focus on our accountability rating and the annual state assessment tests. Our staff has implemented a comprehensive plan for the preparation of our students for even greater successes than we have experienced to date. After establishing the campus goal of maintaining our “exemplary” rating, we have identified student needs in the area of test preparation and will be addressing those needs in special assistance sessions in addition to our work in the regular classroom setting. We intend to not only experience improvement in the overall numbers of students who pass the test; we are planning to increase the number of students who are recognized for “commended” performance. Teachers will be working with students during the Teaming period, and during before and after school sessions. We ask that if your child is talking about being invited to one of these activities, that you urge them to attend and take advantage of their teacher’s efforts. With your support we will be able to ensure that test day is an opportunity for your children to shine and experience the successes and associated recognition they so richly deserve. TAKS tests are scheduled for the week of April 16th; please help us make sure our students are well prepared, well rested, and ready to “make their mark.” It is important to note that lunch period times change on these days and we also request that doctor’s appointments, etc. not be scheduled for this week if at all possible.

At “press time” we were in the midst of our spring cookie dough fundraiser. We publicized this event as a “Technology Fund Raiser” because our intent is to advance the technological capabilities of our instructional staff. Through a campus Technology Committee we have established a priority list of technology acquisitions designed to make our classrooms even more advanced. Included on the list are projectors that will allow teachers to present the contents of a variety of programs for the entire class to view, Classroom Performance Systems (CPS) that make a classroom more productive and interactive, Smart Board units that also draw students out to participate to a higher degree, and many other components with the emphasis of assisting students as they reach higher levels of competence. Thank you for your generous support of our goals.

As with every edition of this newsletter it is imperative that we once again thank the parents for their support; we are grateful. Please do not hesitate to make contact with your child’s teachers, the counselors or an administrator if you are in need of information, support or assistance; we are here for that purpose and we welcome your involvement.

Parent volunteers still needed to tutor math students for the TAKS test!

It involves tutoring for 45 min/week during the student’s elective or athletic/PE class. You don’t have to be a math whiz to help. Answers for the problems are provided, as well as, how to solve the problems. We need your help!

If interested, please contact Kathy LeMaster at 972- 355-3227 or Kathy.lem@verizon.net

We had another great Fiesta on March 2nd! The final Fiesta for this school year will be April 27. I would like to thank all of the wonderful parents who have supplied cookies, brownies, candy and chips to the delight of all of the students in attendance. Thank you also to the staff and administration of Forestwood for supporting this program.

I would also like to thank all of the great students who have attended and been on their best behavior (especially while eating in the library). It is easy to see why they were chosen by their teachers in the first place!

Falcon Fiesta is a recognition and reward program during which students selected by teachers have an opportunity to attend a short PTA sponsored reception in their honor.

Students are selected by teachers from the six teams at the end of each six week grading period. (3 girls and 3 boys from each team are selected.) The selection criteria is based upon positive attitude toward school work, consistent effort, excellent behavior, hard work, and attention is given to those who may have shown significant improvement. This is a program every student has an opportunity to attain and should work toward. Go for it Falcons and make it hard for the teachers to choose!

If you have any questions, please contact Julie Rael, (972)539-9314 or julie.rael@verizon.net

The FMS Reading Department would like to send a “THANK YOU” and “SHOUT OUT” to:

Random House, Inc. and the Lewisville Education Foundation

Both parties made tremendous contributions towards our “Play It Forward” project!!

Random House, Inc. donated 100 Little Golden Books and gave FMS students permission to read and record the Little Golden Books onto CDs.

The Lewisville Education Foundation (LEF) granted FMS $2,000 towards the project! So far, we have purchased a computer projector, digital camera, printer/scanner/copier, CDs, CD cases and LOTS of printer ink and materials to create picture books.

The students will record their CD, and then create a CD jacket to represent the book. They will put the book, with the recorded CD, into a zip-lock baggie and donate the “book bags” throughout the community.

The 7th grade students involved in the project took it a step further. They wrote AND illustrated their own books; using the theme: good social behavior or etiquette. While we work on this project, we will discuss the importance of reading and community service!

Thanks again: Random House, Inc. and Lewisville Education Foundation!!

FBI
NEWSFLASH!

Did you know that Forestwood Middle School will soon be the safest middle school in the district? Why you ask? Well it’s because the newest division of the FBI is organizing right here on our very own campus! That’s right FMS is now the home of the Forestwood Brigade in Action, or FBI Action for short. We are a new student-run organization devoted to creating and maintaining a safe educational environment. Our newest recruits will be selected and trained the week of February 19. Their first duty assignment will be to watch over the parking lots before and after school each day beginning February 26.

Parents, please use caution when driving around the Forestwood campus. Our recruits will be stationed at each of the crosswalks and will be wearing bright neon yellow t-shirts and holding stop signs. Please follow their direction and encourage your student(s) to do the same. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of the FBI Action sponsors (469- 713-5972). Thank you for your help and support!
Sincerely,

Your FBI Action Sponsors
Christy Labry, Melissa Rabjohn, and Jan Murphy

DEAR 6TH GRADE PARENTS,

Each May the 6th grade teachers try to find a way to reward all of our students for their hard work and dedication throughout the school year. This year, we are planning two exciting events:
• Wednesday, May 2 - Field Trip to the Scarborough Renaissance Festival
• Friday, May 4 – Field Day

More detailed information will be coming home with your child the week of February 26. Money and permission slips will be collected through your child’s World Cultures class March 5-9.

These two big events mean we have a big need for parent volunteers! We are looking for patient, energetic, fun-loving chaperones to go with us on our field trip and workers to run our field day events. If you are available for either one (or both) of these events please indicate that on the forms your child brings home. Please keep in mind that all volunteers must have a background check on file with LISD. If you have not filled out the district volunteer application, please go to www.lisd.net (click on Parents/Students and then on Volunteer Application). It can take up to 3 weeks to process an application, so please apply as soon as possible!

We are all looking forward to the end of another successful school year! Thank you for your willingness to help us celebrate!
