Activities

At Forestwood Middle School, students can become active in organizations which will stimulate interests and create leadership qualities.  The student sponsors of these organizations and activities dedicate many hours of hard work and time.  As their reward, they receive satisfaction in knowing that they invested their talents and abilities in the future leaders of our community and country.

Student Council

If you want to do things and go places, Student Council may be exactly where you need to be.  Electing officers, going to parades, parties, dances, making posters, attending lock-ins, planning spirit days, being a part of fund raising, attending conventions, doing ecology projects, and helping in teacher appreciation activities makes life full of fun and meaning at Forestwood.  Join Student Council.  It's definitely the place to be at Forestwood.

Culture Club

Students in the Culture Club learn about other places in the world. We have visiting speakers, do research on countries, enjoy great food, learn about art and costumes, and share our stories about our homelands.

Yearbook Staff

The Yearbook Staff is a group of students who are highly dedicated and chosen because of their character and academic excellence. Students who are involved on this staff collect memories throughout the year on film and create a unique yearbook students will enjoy. Headquartered in Forestwood's art classroom, the staff organizes the layout for the year. You never know when they will snap that picture of you and ask your opinion about subjects. When students look back at their past, the memories of their friends and school are what they recall while looking at their yearbook. What a gratifying project to be proud of!

National Junior Honor Society

The Forestwood chapter of the National Junior Honor Society boasts 119 members for '05 - '06. The membership requirements are to maintain a 92.0 average, complete 5 hours of community service each semester, and to attend monthly meetings. We help with school service projects such as bookfair, textbook inventory, and readers for the SPH classroom. We are sponsoring the Prudential Volunteer Awards Program through Oct. 21st. Any student may pick up an application from their 4th period teacher. This recognizes students for outstanding community service. Their efforts total hundreds of hours of service. The commitment and enthusiasm of these young people reflects the positive spirit evident in all the student body at FMS. What a terrific organization!

Orchestra, Band, and Choir

Take Note Everyone... Forestwood students who belong to the orchestra, band, and choir programs are a great pride and joy for our school. The students in these programs have won numerous awards and honors at competitions. In less than a semester, students who have never touched an instrument in their life or sung around the house can shock their parents with their great accomplishment of playing or singing in their first concert. Teachers prepare the students to become a part of the high school music program and become the talented musicians of the future.

Sports and Cheerleading

Two, Four, Six, Eight...Who do we appreciate...Forestwood Falcons! Forestwood's sports and cheerleading programs for boys and girls teach skills, promote teamwork, and show school spirit by representing our school competitively. The mighty seventh and eighth grade Falcons exhibit school pride as they play their best. Volleyball, football, basketball, soccer, and track are a few sports our Falcons play. The cheerleaders support the boys' teams by their cheers and dances at the pep rallies and games. GO......FALCONS!

Geography Bee

The National Geography Bee is a nationwide contest for students in grades four through eight. Sponsored by National Geographic World and Chrysler Corporation, the Bee is a program of the National Geographic Society. The National Geography Bee is designed to encourage the teaching and study of geography. The Bee is a great opportunity for students of all abilities and ages to come together and help one another prepare for the School, State, and National Bee. At Forestwood, biweekly, after-school contests are held for the students to help them prepare for the actual school bee. If a student qualifies to go to state and then on to nationals, that student has the possibility of winning the National Bee and a $25,000.00 college scholarship. Although the national prize is incredible, the preparation and work before the bee are what, in the past, have proven to be of the most value to the students.

Spelling Bee

The Dallas Morning News sponsors a televised spelling bee open to all 5th-8th grade public, private, and parochial school students in the 38-county Dallas Region. Each county may send one champion to The Dallas Morning News Regional Spelling Bee, except Dallas County, which may send two champions--one from the public schools and one from the private schools. The regional champion will win an all expense paid trip for two to Washington, D.C., to compete in the National Spelling Bee and win many other exciting prizes. All county champions will receive county champion certificates. The words and rules are obtained by the Forestwood's Spelling Bee sponsor. Students from Forestwood enter the school spelling bee. The two winners compete in the middle school/feeder elementary school division spelling bee. The two winners from middle school/feeder elementary school spelling bee compete in the district spelling bee. The winner from the district spelling bee competes in the County Regional Spelling Bee sponsored and televised by the Dallas Morning News. The winner of the Regional Spelling Bee competes in the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. This is a great opportunity for those spellers at Forestwood to buzz their way to the National Championship and win!

Falcon Fiesta

Every six weeks grading period, a group of ten students from each grade level is chosen, by their team of teachers, to be served pizza, soda, and desserts by the principal, assistant principals, and counselors during their fourth period class. The students are selected on the basis of improvement in classes, hard-work, overall citizenship, individual achievement, and performance in the classroom. Falcon Fiesta is an enjoyable time for students to be recognized and rewarded for individual achievements.
