Drugs and Tobacco
Per School Board Policy (Codes FNCD and FNCF), students shall not possess or use tobacco products, alcohol, controlled substances or dangerous drugs. Such violations may result in expulsion.
Field Trips
Each grade level plans trips to enhance the curriculum or provide enrichment opportunities. Parents who have completed their background checks are needed as chaperones to enhance learning and safety. Each grade will need a different number of parents. Younger children need more adults than older students. Sometimes, the event itself may limit the number of participants and tickets available. Only designated chaperones should attend the trip with the grade level. For safety reasons, younger siblings should not attend field trips and will not be allowed to ride school vehicles. Information regarding destinations and number of parents needed will be provided by each grade level as soon as the trips are scheduled. No parent will be invited to attend a field trip if their criminal history check has not been approved—please complete a form as soon as possible. (See Criminal History Checks.) A “LISD School Related Absences Parent/Guardian Form” must be completed for all situations where a child leaves the school during the day to attend a school-related activity; these forms are provided by the teachers when field trips are announced.
Parties
There will be three parties—Winter Holiday, Valentine's Day, and end of school. Please consult your room representative or PTA room representative chairperson (see school directory) for party guidelines. We ask that all Room Mothers/Dads adhere to this schedule. The minimal food values do not apply to our three party days.
Restricted Activity
If your child is to be restricted from physical activity, the teacher needs a daily note specifying the restriction. If he or she is to miss more than three consecutive days, a written doctor's excuse is necessary. Please see that your child dresses in an appropriate manner for participating in physical education activities. Casual clothing and tennis shoes are advised to minimize the risk of injury. We also encourage your child to dress for the weather conditions. This is a part of health care that your child needs to start to remain in good health all year. (See also Health Information - Restricted Activity.)
School Supplies
Supply lists are available in the office and on the LISD website. Supplies should be replenished as needed. “Wrap packs” are offered at cost by the PTA in May and will be delivered to your child's room at the start of the next school year, on the first day of school. Additional assignment books are available in the office.
Seven Habits of Highly Responsible Students
- They set goals. Goals help students focus on what is important. If they have a vision of where they want to go, they're more likely to get there. Students find it easier to say "no" to irresponsible behavior because they are saying "yes" to their vision of the future.
- They plan their time. Use a calendar to help students learn to organize their time and plan time for homework.
- They study every day. Learning any subject is like building a brick wall—you do it steadily, one brick at a time.
- They take notes in class. Teachers will almost always spell out what they think is important. Review notes before a test and watch grades go up.
- They have the tools they need. Responsible students never show up without pencil, paper, and books as needed.
- They keep their commitments. Responsible students honor their commitments, to others and to themselves, completing assignments well and on time. They do their share of the group projects and go to soccer practice even when it's cold.
- They get ready ahead of time. Responsible students have learned that being late, or being early, is controlled by their choice. They take time before bedtime to get ready for the next day by laying out clothes and packing lunches and backpacks.
