Each year a number of requests are directed to our office concerning the type of clothing which might be suitable for school wear. The District's dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards. Students and parents may determine a student's personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following guidelines.
- All students must be clean and neatly groomed.
- A student's hair, by the nature of the style, shall not tend to create a distraction. Hair should be of a natural color. Colors should not be extreme (no pink, orange, green, purple, etc).
- Clothing which, in the opinion of the professional staff, would be deemed inappropriate or offensive for school in general, shall not be allowed; e.g., among, but not limited to, split sides, see-through clothing, halters, bare shoulder tops, midriffs, fishnet tops, tank tops, bike shorts, or pants not worn at the natural waistline.
- Male students may wear long pants or shorts of appropriate length (at or about mid-thigh or longer but should not drag the ground) and shirts of appropriate length.
- Female students may wear skirts of appropriate length, long pants, or shorts of appropriate length (at or about mid-thigh or longer but should not drag the ground). Shirts must cover the shoulder. Straps must be 2 inches wide. Shirts must cover the midriff when the arm is in a raised position.
- Appropriate undergarments shall be worn by all students.
- Students may not wear clothing that advertises by name or symbol any products that are not permitted in school, including, but not limited to:
- Alcohol
- Drugs
- Tobacco
- Obscenities
- Profanity
- Suggestive slogans
- No hats, sweatbands, or bandannas shall be worn in the school building, either by male or female students, except on special days.
- For health reasons, students are required to wear enclosed shoes with straps at the heel. Sneakers or enclosed shoes are required for PE and are highly recommended daily. Due to increased PE time requirements, fire drills, and safety issues, we suggest students wear tennis shoes daily. Flip-flop style shoes are not allowed.
- Wearing of metal, plastic, or rubber cleats is not allowed. Shoes with wheels are not permitted.
The administration reserves the right to determine any inappropriate dress that it feels is disruptive to the school environment. Students will be given one warning. Students will be given the opportunity to correct this problem for the second infraction or to be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day.
