BUS INFORMATION
At the Bus Stop On the Bus Getting Off the Bus Consequences for Misconduct

The District makes school bus transportation available to all students living two or more miles from school. This service is provided at no cost to students. Bus routes and any subsequent changes are posted at the school. Further information may be obtained by calling Durham Transportation at 972–221–4557.

Riding the bus is a privilege. Improper conduct on the bus will result in bus privileges being denied. Only regularly scheduled bus students may ride the school bus daily. Bus students go immediately to the bus as soon as they are dismissed from school. Students will be expected to follow LISD bus conduct regulations. A student who wishes to ride the bus home with a regular bus rider must have a note from his/her parent. THIS NOTE MUST TO BE SIGNED BY THE OFFICE IN THE MORNING BEFORE THE STUDENT CAN GET ON THE BUS THAT AFTERNOON.

Students are expected to assist District staff in ensuring that buses remain in good condition and that transportation is provided safely. When riding school buses, students are subject to behavioral standards established in the Student Code of Conduct and the School Bus Rider's Safety Handbook (provided by Durham Transportation). Teachers are expected to review the following school bus rules with their students:

At the Bus Stop

  • Be at the bus stop at least five (5) minutes before, but not more than ten (10) minutes prior to bus time.
  • Wait in line on the curb until the bus doors are open.
  • If you miss the bus, do NOT run after it.
  • Do not carry big and clumsy objects onto the bus.
  • Use the hand rail to get on and off the bus.

On The Bus

  • Be under the direct authority of the bus driver.
  • Follow the bus driver’s instructions.
  • Be kind, considerate, and respectful to others.
  • Have written permission from a parent/guardian to leave the bus other than at the regular stop or at school.
  • Be in the assigned seat when the door closes and the bus begins to move.
  • Keep hands and feet, books, and all other objects to oneself and out of the aisles.
  • Refrain from swearing, making rude gestures, and teasing (verbal or nonverbal). Use appropriate language at all times.
  • Throw no objects in the bus or out of the bus.
  • Follow the LISD Student Code of Conduct at all times.
  • Keep noise and activity at a level that does not distract the driver.
  • Refrain from eating on the bus.

Getting Off the Bus

  • Be aware of the bus danger zones.
  • When approaching or leaving the bus, always cross in front of the bus where the driver can see you.
  • If you can touch the bus when you're walking alongside it, you're too close.
  • Wait for a signal from the driver before crossing the street.
  • If you drop something, ask a patrol or adult to get it for you—DO NOT GET IT YOURSELF!

Students who misbehave on the bus will be referred for discipline to the office. This discipline referral must be signed by parents. Students who continue to misbehave may lose bus privileges.
