CURRICULUM

Our curriculum for Language Arts consists of students learning thinking, listening, following directions, and speaking skills.  We read many stories and poems from anthologies and read several chapter books.  We work on enhancing the student's ability to write for a variety of purposes. Cursive writing is re-introduced in the beginning of the year and becomes the required handwritten work.

In Math, we work on mastering addition and subtraction facts and concepts, place value, decimals and fractions, metric and standard measurement concepts, geometric shapes and properties, and introduce multiplication facts and concepts, and division concepts.

The units of study in Science consist of the scientific method, habitats, light and sound, matter and energy, magnets and electricity, and simple machines.  Health is part of the Science grade.  We promote good personal habits, hygiene, and nutrition.

Our Social Studies takes a look at different communities around the world. We look at cultural and geographical regions, celebrations and beliefs.  We want our students to recognize the diversity of our world.

Our students learn keyboarding skills so that they can type by touch.  This helps with their searches on the internet.  The computers in the classroom are used for educational programs, research, and to connect with current events.  These skills will help each child be prepared for the following years.
