CURRICULUM
Our goal is to provide a positive and encouraging work environment where every child learns to take risks and explore their world.  The students build on the foundation skills of first grade.  There is an emphasis on learning responsibility and appropriate life skills for success.

 Language Arts

This encompasses Reading, English, Oral Language, and written language to create a well balanced program.

To enhance reading, we use a variety of instructional and learning strategies such as: guided reading, reading buddies, literature response, journal writing, independent reading, D.E.A.R. time, storybook character day, performing plays, literature circles, exploring different genres, book reports, listening center, writing workshops, and small group shares.  English provides the students with instructions on basic mechanics, spelling, and composition.  Written language provides the students with consistent opportunities to create stories and express their ideas.  Our oral language program is designed to build self-confidence, respect, and an awareness of proper communication along with active listening and speaking skills.

Math

Our goal is to make math instruction exciting and engaging.  We take a hands on approach to exploring the challenges of mathematics today.  We incorporate reading, writing, and oral language into our math lessons. Marilyn Burns is being used as a resource to guide us and the children on our math journey. We want to build the students' mathematical understanding and ways of thinking at an early age, so students can think and reason mathematically.  It is crucial that boys and girls develop a positive attitude towards, and an interest in, mathematics.  In order for this to take place, we strive to create a classroom environment that supports children's learning of mathematics.  We go beyond teaching traditional addition, subtraction, fractions, decimals, and other skills, towards teaching higher level thinking and problem solving.

Science

In second grade all of our students are successful in science.  The purpose is to  build a level of interest in our second graders.  We want them to ask questions, since science is questioning and problem solving.  Students learn that the purpose of science experiments is to explore all of the elements that it encompasses.  Students have many opportunities to explore their environment with hands on lessons.  The science topics that we study are meaningful to the students.  The second grade curriculum units include:
        What is science?
        Living things: animals and dinosaurs
        Our planet Earth
        Weather
        Balancing and weighing
Introduction to solids, liquids, and gases

Social Studies

In second grade social studies, our units of study are: Our Earth, People All Around, Discovering Our Past, We the People, Our Local Community, and A Working World.  At Degan, we do a special economics unit titled Smackers.  In this unit, we learn about profit, loss, production, and supply and demand.  With our profits we purchase something for the school.  We provide many hands-on activities in our study of social studies.
