CURRICULUM
Our goal is to provide a positive and encouraging work environment where every child learns to take risks and explore their world.  The students build on the foundation skills of first grade.  There is an emphasis on learning responsibility and appropriate life skills for success.

First Grade is a year of exploring and discovering.  Boys and girls come to first grade ready to set the world on fire.  It is our job to direct their energy and enthusiasm into helping them become productive, responsible citizens.  When they leave first grade they should still believe that there is nothing they can't do!  We want them to know that learning is fun and that it is a life-long process.

First graders will learn to read, using a variety of approaches.  Phonics, integrated language arts, spelling, handwriting, and basal texts are a major part of the curriculum.

Basic math skills are taught through a variety of hands-on experiences.  They learn about patterns, counting, probability, graphs, money, and geometry, as well as basic addition and subtraction facts.  The foundation for math begins in the first grade.

Science processes are taught through discovery and investigation. Some units covered are Plants, Our World, Forces, and the Five Senses.  Science is integrated into other subjects.

Social Studies is incorporated into our lives in the first grade.  We work very hard on becoming good citizens and good friends.  We learn to accept the consequences for our behavior.

Except the first nine months of life, first graders learn more in this nine month period than they will learn during any other time in their lives.  It is a year of constant learning and growth.  Every child will leave first grade prepared to meet the challenges that are before him/her.  It is our privilege as first grade teachers to guide them.

DEVELOPMENTAL FIRST GRADE

The Developmental First Grade program was established to serve those children who demonstrate young skill levels during the spring kindergarten years and are late spring or summer birthday children who will turn six years old close to the beginning of their first grade year.  These children show normal development patterns intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically.  The DFG  offers a placement that provides for continual growth in a rich curriculum which is customized for children with young skills but normal intelligence.  The curriculum draws from both kindergarten and first grade and is structured to support success in the academic setting for the younger learner.

Developmental First Grade provides a curriculum which is a mixture of the higher level kindergarten concepts and the beginning first grade concepts which are all taught in a classroom which is structured differently than a regular first grade classroom. DFG is very experience based; that is, the children do activities to help them learn.  The curriculum is rich in printed material and language experiences and mathematical concepts and is structured to support success in the academic setting for the young learner.
