The Lewisville Learning Center has served LISD residents since 1988.  Our Center opened its doors to our new facility in October, 2001.  The award-winning innovating design of the Center is giving educators a powerful new educational tool to help the community’s most at-risk students.  Perhaps the most appealing features of the Center are the practical and functional rooms.  The cafeteria, which includes a stage, is filled with sunlight that beams through a series of oversized windows, creating a spacious, comfortable environment.  Key locations for academic enrichment include a reading room with a library as well as lab classrooms complete with necessary features to perform experiments and projects in all science disciplines.  Classrooms containing computers, group activity areas and individual study stations supplement the Center’s learning area.  The Learning Center is a true testament that public education facilities can be both functional and attractive community structures.

The Center has grown from a handful of students served in the early years to approximately 300 students served at a time.  The Center has three separate divisions of students.

DAEP Division (110 students) serves over 700 disciplinary students a year, while our high school Accelerated Division (150 students) serves approximately 400-500 students for academic acceleration each year.  In addition, our new Middle School accelerated program serves around 60-70 over-aged-off-grade level students each year. Thirdly, our Special Education Division ( 25 students ) serves approximately 25-35 all-grade level elementary, middle, and high school special needs students in our “therapeutic-type ”setting.  All of these students have an individual education plan (IEP) prescribing their individual needs. Additionally, this Center serves approximately 30 SAPP (Student Age Parenting Program) students at a time.  All the high schools and some middle school campuses send students to this program. This Center is the district’s only campus offering formal Parenting Education classes.

PROGRAM DIVISIONS

Division information

Accelerated Division:
This division is a school of choice for at-risk high school and middle school students.  Students can attend a 4 hr. day, morning or afternoon, or a 7 hr. day.  If under 18 yrs. of age the parent must choose their specific schedule.  Students apply through their home campus and are placed with an assessment matrix by their counselor.  Normally, students are academically behind or in special need of an alternative program.  Students from each high school may apply to this division. Over-aged (2 yrs) middle school students that are two grade levels behind may also apply.  Limited space is available for middle school students.  The goal of this program is to bring about a positive and productive change in students for success in school.  The curriculum is self-paced and individualized for students’ needs.  Students are not bound by the traditional calendar and may finish a course much faster if motivated to do so.  All students must demonstrate mastery of the subject, meet course TEKS requirements, and pass all TAKS testing requirements before graduation. They must attend small-group counseling weekly with their assigned counselor.  Because of the positive environment, high expectations, and low teacher-student ratio (12:1) most students discover their intellectual potential and personal abilities.  This division will process over 400 students a year and graduate usually 70+ fifth year seniors.

Admission:
Interested students and parents need to visit with their home school counselor for referral to this division.  All placements require completion of an Application Matrix Form and formal interview with a Learning Center counselor.

DAEP  ( Disciplinary Alternative Education Program ) Division:
This program serves all the schools with the district.  Most students are middle and high school-age students referred by their home school administrator for behavior challenges or offenses on or off  their campus per the district Student Code of Conduct. Elementary students are also assigned when involved in a serious infraction of the district’s Student Code of Conduct. Students are assigned a specific number of days at the Center but not enrolled here. Their home campus teachers send lessons and assignments for completion while at the Center.  For long-term placements, 30 days or more, computer-assisted curriculum assignments are available to home campus teachers to elect in place of or in addition to their regular assignments. The classroom environment is strictly supervised and acceptable social behaviors and learning skills are taught.  Students are considered on probation status by the district; continued violations of the Student Code of Conduct may warrant expulsion to the county JJAEP Center in Denton,Tx. Students are assigned to DAEP for various lengths of time, from five days to the entire semester, depending on their offense and the Student Code of Conduct.

Admission:  All placements to this division are made by the home campus administrator.

Special Education Division:   (SAC-Social Adjustment Class)
This division has the “most restrictive” placement in the district for secondary Special education students.  SAC is a nurturing, self-contained program designed to assist students in developing social, emotional, and academic skills necessary to succeed in school and the workplace.  All students are taught specifically to their IEP (Individual Education Plan), and in coordination with their BIP (Behavior Intervention Plan), as outlined when admitted.  The Boys’Town Behavior Model is used by all the staff and has proven to be a very effective teaching model for young people with severe challenges.  CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) is provided to all the staff in this division and has proven very successful in creating a positive and social environment that causes students to become successful.  A (4:1) student-teacher ratio allows extensive teacher intervention and successful results.

Admission: Students from all the schools are placed here by ARD Committee decisions only.  Review and recommendation of district psychologist is recommended.
