What is Online Learning?

What is distance (online) learning?
Online learning offers the flexibility to both teachers and students to participate in a course at their convenience within the duration of the course. The teacher and student are not in the same physical location. The length of a course may be 9 or 18 weeks and will start and end on the same dates as the regular school calendar. Taking an online course will enable you to accelerate your education.

LISD eSchool distance learning classes use the Internet for teaching and learning. They are designed to give students flexibility in their study schedule.
You can:
- Find your class materials 24/7
- Do your course work at any hour of the day or night
- Hand in your homework and assignments via the Internet per the schedule for the course
- Take all of your tests EXCEPT the final, on the Internet.
How is distance learning the same as on-site (classroom) learning?

  • Online classes begin and end on the same dates as classes on your campus.
  • Assignments are due on a regular schedule.
  • You MUST complete the work on schedule, however, you may work ahead as much as you like.
-

The final exam must be completed by the given date, however, it can be taken earlier if you have completed the class work and are ready. It  MUST be passed in order pass and receive credit for the course.

- Grades - your grade will be calculated the same as your regular class on campus. It will be composed of your daily assignments as well as your tests. The only difference is that you MUST pass the final to receive credit.
- The academic requirements (reading assignments and workload) are the same as a course taken on campus.
How is distance learning different from on-site learning?
- There is hardily ever a reason to be "absent" from class.
- Ccommunication with your instructor and fellow classmates in writing. You will, however, communicate with your teacher via the phone occasionally.
- You must be quick to send a message to the teacher if you have a question.
- You rarely if ever hear a voice. You have to read what the instructor and your classmates have to say.
Is distance learning easier than on-site learning?

No.
Students often think the course will be easier, but it isn't. In fact, it is sometimes harder. Since there are no class meetings, the only way you are "present" is if you write your thoughts down and send them to the class. This requires thoughtfulness and time. You probably spend about the same time on reading and assignments as you would in a classroom-based class, and the writing probably takes about the same time as sitting in a classroom would.

What is a hybrid course?
A hybrid course is an online course that also requires students to also meet in the classroom part of the time.

How does an LISD eSchool online class work?
In an Online learning class, students log onto a web site to find all course materials. All students will be required to attend an orientation meeting at the beginning of the class. Students will also have to take the final exam at campus in a room that is proctored by a teacher..

How do I participate in class?
Each course has a "forum" or "threaded discussion." Your teacher will set up topics for you to write about or ask questions for you to answer. You will need to think of, compose, and submit a response. You will also need to read and respond to what your classmates write. These "postings," along with your quizzes, assignments, and exams, make up your participation and grade in the class. The postings are the only way your instructor has of knowing you are "out there," so they are extremely important.

How do I find out if I can take and LISD online course?
Each course may have different prerequisites. Check with your counselor to see if you qualify.

What do I expect as a student new to online learning?
Expect to invest 5-8 hours per week in the course. Participation in an online course requires the dedication to complete the work and submit all assignments on time as indicated on the course timeline/schedule. Students may, however, work ahead and complete the course earlier if they choose.

What electronic communication tools are necessary to interact with the teacher.
