Oct. 23 - 31 is Red Ribbon Week

- LISD's Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Taskforce wants everyone to know that Red Ribbon Week will be held Oct. 23 - 31. Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug awareness campaign in the nation. Click here to learn more.

- The public is invited to McAuliffe Elementary Schools' Drug Awareness Night on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. A local DEA agent will speak about drugs readily available in the community, signs of drug abuse and other issues. This program is intended for parents of school-age children and is free of charge. For more information call McAuliffe Elementary at 469-713-5959.

- Polser Paws 4 Melissa, a Polser Elementary School team that participated in the recent Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, raised more than $1100 in honor of the late Melissa Ricks, a Polser Elementary volunteer and PTA member.

- Kathy Uhlich (special assignment teacher, Secondary Curriculum) was elected Vice President of Membership by the Texas Council for the Social Studies (TCSS). Retired director of elementary social studies Judy Brodigan was elected President of TCSS.

- Hedrick Elementary School's fourth annual Baseball Day was a hit, thanks to ARAMARK's Food Services. More than 700 hot dogs were grilled at the event by Sharon Landrum (ARAMARK supervisor) and LISD staff members Kevin Fisher (Secondary Curriculum), Maxine Wisnoski (Food Services), Beryl Denning (Food Services), Maria Delgado (Food Services), Electa Eaves (Food Services), Reina Gonzalez (Food Services) and Hedrick Elementary assistant principal Obie Esquivel.

- One of the students on Jeff Starr's (teacher, Griffin MS) mineral-collecting field trip found a 1.23 ct yellow-white diamond. The weekend trip to a diamond mine in Hot Springs, Ark. is an annual event for Jeff's class.

- Marissa Herrera (bilingual teacher, Hedrick ES) grieves the passing of her father on Oct. 14.

Wedding cake

- Becky Pfenning (teacher, Parkway ES) married Adam Davis on Sept. 29.

- LeeChel Ondracek (instructional specialist, Technology) married Chris Moersch on Oct. 19.

- Ashley Goldsmith (ESL pre-k teacher, Jackson ECC) and Derrek Anduiza are engaged. Ashley is the daughter of Peggy Goldsmith (teacher, Forest Vista ES) and Gary Goldsmith (principal, Shadow Ridge ES).

Little ones

- Matt (MHS '91) and Jena Toich (teacher, Downing MS) are the first-time parents of a daughter, Marley Faith, born on July 20.

- Johnsie and Alan King (Chief Financial Offcer) announce the arrival of their granddaughter, Elena Hester King, on Oct. 2. Johnsie retired as LISD's Niche supervisor.
