LISD students to participate in annual MLK day celebration

LISD students and local organizations will participate in the annual Dr. King commemoration celebration at 7 p.m. on Jan. 19 at the Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church in Flower Mound.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jerry Roy will welcome guests along with other community officials. During the ceremony, winners of the art and essay contests will be announced. For more information about the event, click here.

Bowling for Scholars set for Jan. 26

LISD's Council of PTAs will sponsor Bowling for Scholars on Jan. 26. The registration deadline is extended to Jan. 18. Click here for more information.

Congratulations

- Lewisville Lake Symphony announced that its annual Young Artists' Competition has been named in honor of LISD Board of Trustees member Vernell Gregg. Mrs. Gregg is a long-time volunteer for the Symphony, founded in 1999 to highlight young classical talent in Texas and from surrounding areas.

- Jerilyn Welsh-Roe (counselor, Valley Ridge and Wellington Elementary Schools) received her master's degree in school counseling from Dallas Baptist University. Jerilyn's husband is Jim Roe (assistant principal, Hebron HS).

- Aimee Maldonado (teacher, Degan ES) received her master's degree in administration from Texas Woman's University.

- Kelly Roden (teacher, Degan ES) received her master's degree in administration from University of North Texas.

- John Gall (boys' soccer head coach, Marcus HS) has been named Southwest Region Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and Adidas (NSCAA/Adidas). He is now eligible for NSCAA/Adidas National High School Coach of the Year honors. The NSCAA will announce the National High School Coach of the Year during a special ceremony on Jan. 18. Coach Gall guided the Marauders in 2007 to the Texas Class 5A State Championship, the nation's #1 ranking by NSCAA/Adidas and a perfect 30-0-0 record. His overall record is 120-30-12.

- Justin Navarre, a Lewisville HS graduate and son of Pam Navarre (teacher, Garden Ridge ES), received his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from University of North Texas.

- Lisa England (tech facilitator, Ethridge ES) received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Texas Woman's University. She is the sister of Debbie Largent (tech systems administrator, Technology) and Teresa England (tech facilitator, Learning Center).

Bereavement

- Neal Wilson, LISD's interim athletic director, passed away on Jan. 5 after battling leukemia. Neal is survived by his wife, former LISD teacher Donna Wilson, and sons, Darrell and Lance.

Visitation is scheduled for 6 - 8 p.m. on Thurs., Jan. 10 at Dalton & Son Funeral Home in Lewisville. A memorial service is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Sat., Jan. 12 at Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church in Flower Mound.

- Virginia Besse, mother of Caralyn Taylor (teacher, Forest Vista ES), passed away on Dec. 15.

- Gregorio Lopez, grandfather of Karime Rubio (assistant principal, Central ES), passed away on Dec. 31.

- Arlene Burney, mother of Chellie Adams (principal, Prairie Trail ES), passed away on Dec. 31.

Our kids

- David Johnson, a student at Marcus HS and son of Richard and Denise Johnson (teacher, Rockbrook ES), earned his Eagle Scout rank on Dec. 10. David has been involved in Scouting since first-grade. His Eagle service project consisted of building boardwalk sections for the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area.

- Kelson Davis, a senior at Lewisville HS and son of Susan Davis (teacher, Creekside ES), received an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy for next year. Kelson was nominated by Texas State Rep. Michael Burgess.

- Lora Fryt, daughter of Andrea Fryt (content mastery aide, Marcus HS), was named to the Dean's List for the fall semester at Oklahoma State University.

- Zane Willis, grandson of Janice Willis (teacher, McAuliffe ES) and Fred Willis (teacher/golf coach, Lewisville HS), was selected for the Oklahoma All-State Football Team as a linebacker. Zane averaged 18 tackles per game and was ranked as one of the state's leading players throughout the season.

- Sam Garza, a Marcus HS senior soccer player and son of Sue Garza (teacher/coach, Griffin MS), was selected as National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Boys' Soccer High School All-American for his 26 goals and 10 assists during the 2007 season.

Love in bloom

- Kimberly Siegel, a Marcus HS graduate and fourth-grade teacher at Indian Creek ES, became engaged to Branden Clegg on Dec. 22. A Sept. 20 wedding is planned.

- Kenna Kilbride, daughter of Shelby Ballard (ESL teacher, Lewisville HS), married Allen Turner on Dec. 31.

Little additions

- Kayleb Shane Jaster, grandson of Debbie Ehrich (secretary, Parkway ES), arrived on Dec. 12. His parents are Melissa and Adam Jaster.

- Katelyn Avery Nicholls, first granddaughter of Claribel Nicholls (ESL aide, Huffines MS), arrived on Dec. 18. Her parents are Becca and Richard Nicholls.

- Aidan Christopher Tilghman Murphy, son of Ellie and Quiyan Murphy (percussion director, Lewisville HS), arrived on Dec. 20.

- Simon Thomas Anselmi, second grandson of Nels and Marilyn Pearson (teacher, Liberty ES), arrived on Dec. 21. His parents are Nicole and Thomas Anselmi.
