LISD offers a course in Driver Education for District teens.  The course follows the Texas Education Agency's Driver Education curriculum and guidelines.  The classroom phase meets for the state required 32 clock hours.  The driving phase requires each student to have seven (7) hours of behind-the-wheel driving and seven (7) hours of observation.  This will give a thorough overview of the skills needed to be a competent driver.  However, many more hours of practice will be needed to help the student become a good driver.  The parents of each student must make sure the student receives this extra practice by driving with their own child.

To be eligible for enrollment in a Driver Education course, the student must be at least 15 years of age on or before the first day of instruction, and in grades 9-12 at one of the district's high schools.  The student must be able to meet school attendance requirements as specified by the Texas Education Agency.  To obtain a driving permit, the student must present to the DPS an Attendance Verification Form obtained from the high school attendance clerk. In addition, students must also present to the DPS proof of insurance, along with a valid, legal birth certificate and social security card. If your child does not have these documents you must acquire them before enrolling your child in the Driver Education class. Students must bring their original birth certificate and social security card with them the first day of class. Copies are not acceptable.

Driver Education classes have a limited enrollment.  Enrollment is on a first come, first served basis. Classes are offered three (3) times a year from 4:30 pm until 6:30 pm at most locations.   Application Cards are available one month prior to the beginning of class in each of the district's high school offices.   The tuition fee is $325.  Full payment must accompany the registration. Additional information concerning class procedures will be given to the parent when the tuition is paid. Included with this information is a liability release that must be completed and signed by the parent, and returned to the instructor on the first day of class.

If your child is involved in extra-curricular activities (sports, band, choir, service clubs, etc.) please check their calendars for any schedule conflicts before registering them in Driver Education.
